ITD showcases technology at Capitol

Each year the Information Technology Resource Management Council of Idaho (ITRMC) sponsors a Digital Government Day at the Idaho Capitol. State departments and agencies demonstrate recently implemented technology solutions for Legislators and other statehouse visitors.

ITD had prominent part in this year’s Digital Government day on Feb. 8, putting several new technologies on display. ITD’s presence has increased steadily the past five years, and this was its largest, most impressive display of technology.

Two laptop computers were set up with large flat screen LCD monitors. Volunteers from several ITD divisions explained a number of new systems developed and brought on line the past year. In addition to the two laptop computers, a new mobile application developed in Highways maintenance was demonstrated on a handheld device and a new Tablet computer was used to demonstrate other opportunities for mobile applications.

ITD staff members were on hand all day in the rotunda, demonstrating applications and hardware and answering questions for Legislators, other state employees and the public.
New systems demonstrated this year were:

  • Travel Information - CARS/511
  • AMS Advantage financial system
  • Media Manager - Online news and information tool
  • Public Transportation, new online services
  • DMV, latest online applications
  • Highway safety, recent programs and information

The event was very successful and well received. The Public Affairs staff expressed its appreciation to the many volunteers who participated in the department’s Digital Government presentations:

  • Alison Lantz and Millie Miles, Highways, 511 Traveler Information
  • Tony Ernest, Highways, PDA/Mobile Rest Area Maintenance application
  • Ken Stewart and Alden Jamison, Administration, AMS Advantage
  • Joy Finley and Reggie Phipps, DMV, Online Audio Driver's Manual
  • Greg Fredericksen, Steve Rich, and Brook Smith, Office of Traffic and Highway Safety, WebCARS (crash analysis system)
  • Steve Jackson, Public Affairs, Media Manager

For most of the volunteers this year was their first time at this event. Others, like Vicky Fisher and Nancy Wendell from DMV and Steve Jackson from Public Affairs have presented at Digital Government this for several years. In contrast, Phipps has represented ITD at all five of the annual events.

Butch Ragsdale and John Krause from Public Transportation were on hand to observe in anticipation of presenting some of the division’s new online systems in the future.

Tim Gawron and Eric Weaver of Corporate IT played a significant part in ITD’s success this year by assembling all of the hardware and ensuring that it functioned well during the demonstrations.
