Engineers from throughout Idaho will assemble Feb. 24 for the annual dinner meeting held in conjunction with National Engineers Week. The banquet will begin at 7 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel, 1555 Pocatello Creek Road in Pocatello. A formal program, featuring Dr. Leonard J. Bond, director of the Idaho National Laboratory’s Center for Advanced Energy Studies, will follow the banquet. A no-host, pre-dinner social will begin at 6 p.m. The U.S. Department of Energy has a vision to create the nation's preeminent, internationally recognized nuclear energy research, development, and demonstration laboratory in Idaho. The new Idaho National Laboratory, under the management and leadership of the Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA), is a multi-program laboratory that will lead the renaissance of the world's energy economy while securing the nation's energy future. The Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) is a central element in developing the new INL and is a key element in the laboratory transformation strategy. The center will be located in a new building on the Idaho Falls campus that is due for completion in June 2008. The vision for CAES is that it will be an internationally recognized joint institute (Idaho State University, University of Idaho and Boise State University and BEA), which facilitates regional, national, and international research and education in energy sciences and public policy. Bond joined the Battelle Energy Alliance leadership team Feb. 1, 2005. He is an applied physicist who has held posts in academia, industry and national laboratories, and has more than 30 years of experience working on energy/measurement topics in the United Kingdom and United States. Previous appointments include: He received a bachelor's degree in applied physics and a doctorate in physics from The City University, London. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the IEE and a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng). Bond holds seven patents and is the author or co-author of more than 200 publications. The banquet cost is $22.50 per person if paid with the reservation by noon on Feb. 22.
