In some instances, their eyes cannot see over the wheel – not the steering wheel, but the one on the road. Despite the overwhelming size and power of machines that clear snow from winter highways, pre-school and Head Start students experienced the trucks from the ground up recently. District 5 maintenance crews displayed their highway equipment, described their responsibilities and handed out work zone safety coloring books to students in Nancy Albano’s Head Start class at the Lincoln Early Childhood Center in Pocatello on Feb. 23. ITD’s substitute teachers were Wayne Curtis, Guy Zahn and Scott Baker. (Top left: Wayne Curtis passes out a work zone safety coloring book; below left, children explore a new playground tunnel, the inside of a snowplow blade. Entering the blade/tunnel is Dakota, grandson of Joan Kley of the District 5 Materials section.)
