Explore the interstates while getting fit

ITD employees have an opportunity to travel the nation’s interstate highway system, celebrate its 50th anniversary, learn about its development and maintain a healthy lifestyle without straying too far from home.

The 2006 spring exercise challenge, which officially begins Sunday (April 16), focuses on the golden anniversary of the national interstate highway system created with signing of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956.

“You are challenged to take part in this exercise event by making a 10-week exercise commitment and recording your exercise activity,” according to the challenge organizers. “While you track your exercise and record your time, the challenge log sheet will follow along a fun route with information on Idaho’s interstates.”

The goal is to exercise at least an average of three hours per week over the next 10 weeks. Participants may choose from more than 60 physical activities that promote better health and exercise. The fitness challenge is based on hours spent exercising rather than degree of difficulty so everyone can benefit from the program.

Those who complete the 10-week program and log at least 30 hours of physical activity from the approved list may choose from a variety of rewards, including a long-sleeve denim shirt, a long-sleeve wind shirt, a fleece blanket or a hat. Each year one district team and one team from Headquarters earn a traveling trophy for best employee participation. In addition to this team competition, this year the Federal Highway Administration is beginning a similar competition.

Additional information is available by requesting it on the registration form. Wellness coordinators should be able to provide the forms. They are: Barbara Baldwin, District 1; Dennis Lenz, D-2; Michelle Emmons, D-3; Joyce Shaw, D-4; Larry Roberts, D-5; Cathy Koon, D-6; and Pauline Davis, HQ.

Completed registration forms must be returned by Friday, April 21. The fitness challenge runs through June 24.
