ITD employees encouraged to try
alternative commute during May in Motion

Gas prices are rising faster than spring temperatures and river levels, forcing many motorists to take a second look at travel options they first considered during last summer’s practice round.

If there’s a ray of sunshine piercing the current gas-price clouds in the Treasure Valley, it’s the opportunity to take advantage of public transportation.

The Ada County Highway District and Commuteride plan a number of activities in May to draw attention to alternative travel and promote group commutes. Designated May in Motion, the activities include music and free treats in downtown Boise, a bike and walk-to-work day, random rider rewards and special incentives to abandon the lone-passenger commute.

ITD continues to support the activities and encourages employees to take advantage of the options provided by ACHD/Commuteride and Valley Regional Transit. ITD finished ahead of other organizations of similar size in the percentage of employees who try public transportation during May in Motion month.

“ITD is again supporting the month-long Treasure Valley promotion ‘May in Motion – Exploring Transportation Alternatives,' ” according to information released today (Friday, April 28). “Our goal is to defend our two-year championship by getting as many employees as possible to walk, bike, bus, vanpool or carpool their way to work during the month of May.”

Employees are encouraged to pick up participation forms from any of the following:

  • Sandy Nelson, Annex
  • Venus Nielson, Annex
  • Anita Jausoro, Public Transportation
  • Gail Grenz, Print Shop
  • Carla Anderson, Right-of-Way
  • Patricia Bolomet, Office of Traffic and Highway Safety
  • Maryanne Zimmerman, District 3, or
  • The Headquarters Security Desk

Participants are asked to log all of the days alternative transportation modes are used in May. Those who complete and submit their forms to Tammie Jauregui by the end of the month will be eligible for prizes.

“Participation in this important promotion help preserve the quality of life we all enjoy here in the Treasure Valley,” according to organizers.

Wednesday, May 3: Get DOWNtown using a commute alternative and join Commuteride, ValleyRide and others from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Eighth Street to enjoy music and free treats.

Rewards will be given to those who pick up information about commute alternatives.

May 19: Bike and Walk to Work Day: From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., between Bannock and Idaho streets), free snacks and beverages will be available along with free bike bags to the first 50 bike or walk commuters.

May 22-26: Random Rider Rewards: Prizes and surprises await ValleyRide bus commuters traveling Monday through Friday. This would be a good week to get on board the alternative commute.
