Convoy leaves San Francisco

As you all know, the "Celebrate the Interstate!" Cross-Country Convoy is underway! The 40-some convoy participants, including several AASHTO staff members, several state DOT representatives, sponsors, and others, arrived in San Francisco on Tuesday, June 13, and are participating in a series of preliminary logistical meetings.

The convoy's official departure is tomorrow, Friday, June 16th, with a kick-off event in San Francisco featuring several dignitaries and honored guests, including Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta and Governor of California Arnold Schwarzeneggar.

If you would like to follow the convoy and find out where they are and what they're doing, simply go to AASHTO's Interstate 50th website (http://www.interstate50th.org/ ), under the heading "Convoy."

The website features:

  1. Satellite GPS tracking;
  2. Several blogs -- one by Merrill Eisenhower Atwater, great-grandson of President Eisenhower; one by convoy participant Chuck Zimmerman of the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council; the Roadside Conversations Team from the University of Illinois; and others!
  3. A daily posting of photographs of the convoy's activities and events by AASHTO staff member and Convoy Advance Team/Photography Coordinator David Dubov and his team, Wayde Powell, Tate Jackson, and Jason Finneyfrock;
  4. A copy of the Convoy Participant Handbook, which includes a list of convoy participants, sponsors, a detailed itinerary, route map, etc; and
  5. A copy of the National Commemorative Program, which details state-by-state convoy events.
