COMPASS extends comment deadline

The board of the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS), at its monthly meeting Tuesday (June 20), extended the deadline to adopt Communities in Motion: Regional Long-Range Transportation Plan for up to 60 days – through September.

Communities in Motion is the six-county, 20-year-plus plan that will address issues on the regional transportation system, evaluate the needs for future corridors, and address the effects of growth on transportation.

The plan was to be adopted at the board’s July 16 meeting, but because of the quality and quantity of public response during the comment period on the draft plan in May, the board agreed with the project team that more time is needed to review, analyze, and consider input for inclusion.

The formal comment period began April 18 and ended May 19. Comments indicate that 72 percent of respondents favor the plan. Four major themes emerged from the public comments received:

  1. Strong support for a regional transit system with walking and biking paths
  2. Strong support for the new growth scenario, particularly keeping jobs, services and homes closer together
  3. Willingness to support increased taxes, especially for public transportation
  4. Support for improving regional corridors

An overview of the public involvement process with summary comments, and transcribed full comments, are located at: www.communitiesinmotion.org/conversation06 or by telephone at 855-2558, ext. 231. The next Communities in Motion newsletter also will contain results of the public comment period.

The new COMPASS Web site also is operating. Its address remains the same: www.compassidaho.org. Please take time to explore the site. Some features include:

  • A "What's New" page to see the latest additions
  • A new Communications and Public Awareness section that contains an "Articles" page where information is available on growth and transportation issues in the Treasure Valley
  • A COMPASS Board and Committees section where discussion items for COMPASS meetings are posted, and
  • A calendar that lists coming events and meetings

Please don't hesitate to contact COMPASS to offer comments or ask questions about the site: 855-2558, ext. 229 or ext. 231 or send e-mail responses to: tschorzman@compassidaho.org .
