ITD's 511 video ads claim national honor

Before venturing out on a hazardous trip through cyberspace, the computer user dons a protective helmet and gloves. Another visual image shows how icy highways can leave the cart (a U-Haul trailer) leading the horse (a sports utility vehicle.)

Both video images were part of a package of 15-second messages designed to promote use of Idaho’s new 511 Traveler Information system. They not only attracted the attention of television audiences statewide, they also drew praise in national judging.

The series of spots, produced by ITD video specialists Dave Tuttle and Mark Hall, received top honors at the National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop recently in Oklahoma City.

“Clever. Catchy. This is exactly what we should all be aspiring to,” said a judge from the Wyoming Department of Transportation. “Too often DOTs fall in the tradition trap. Bold spots like these are what the public is going to respond to.”

“I really enjoyed these ads. They were engaging and drew attention with the music and visuals. Nicely put together,” wrote another judge.

“I liked the second spot the best, but both were great. Clever, fun and got the message across. Well done,” responded a third judge.

They awarded scores of between 37 and 47 points on a scale of 50.

Public Information Officer Jeff Stratten and information specialist Mel Coulter participated in the workshop and accepted the award on behalf of ITD.
