Flag pole dedicated after crash by impaired driver

School children at Whitney Elementary School in Boise are well aware of the risks that impaired driving pose and the destruction that follow. The flag pole in front of their school was a vivid reminder until recently.

A driver who tested over the blood alcohol limit plowed into the school's flag pole last year, rendering it unusable. Since the crash, a new pole sprouted in its place ready to display the American flag again. The pole was properly dressed Monday following a dedication ceremony organized by the Boise Police Department and school officials.

BPD officers joined U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo to dedicate and raise a new flag.

The senator presented the school with a new flag that, in a previous life, flew over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Boise police officers also announced extra patrols through Labor Day, focusing on impaired drivers.

Joining the Boise Police Department in the intensified campaign to locate and cite impaired drivers this weekend were: the Canyon County Sheriff’s Department., Nampa Police, Meridian Police and Idaho State Police. Many Idaho law enforcement agencies will increase patrols as a result of grants from the Idaho Transportation Department. Funds pay for overtime through the Labor Day Holiday weekend.
