Engineering students at Boise State University are honing their skills through a partnership with the Idaho Transportation Department. The students, studying civil engineering design, are using the Payette River Bridge south of Payette as a case study, said Bryon Breen, a transportation department design engineer. The bridge presents students with environmental, structural and geotechnical challenges. The students will use information provided by the transportation department. In the exercise, which is not part of the transportation department's ongoing design work, students in the senior-level class will use the information to decide what kind of footings the bridge will have and how wide it will be. "They're going to design the project just like we would," Breen said. "The professor wants to give them a real-world design project."
