Holiday traffic safety emphasis patrols begin

Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are getting tough with drivers early as holiday traffic safety emphasis patrols hit the streets beginning today (Dec. 1).

In addition to citations and warnings this holiday season, law enforcement officers will distribute a brochure explaining why Idaho is targeting drunk or drugged drivers, aggressive driving behavior and drivers not wearing seat belts, according to Kevin Bechen with ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety.

Last year, 100 people were killed and an additional 889 were injured in traffic crashes caused by impaired drivers. State and local law enforcement officers made 9,072 DUI arrests in 2005.

“We want to get the message out early and clearly that Idahoans deserve a safe holiday season,” Bechen said. “While impaired drivers put everyone at risk, the best defense against impaired drivers or other irresponsible driving behavior is to wear a seat belt.”

Law enforcement officers also will watch for aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, running red lights or stop signs, and failing to yield the right-of-way.
