Empty shoes will stress need to use seat belts

A weeklong demonstration is scheduled to begin Jan. 22 to raise awareness about the number of Idaho fatalities that resulted from people not wearing seat belts.

“Empty Shoes” is an event that will use pairs of shoes to represent the 126 people killed in traffic crashes statewide in 2005 while not properly restrained. The demonstration is being organized by the Idaho Seat Belt Coalition and is part of the coalition’s education effort about the need for Idahoans to buckle up.

“If you have strong feelings about the importance of seat belt usage in Idaho, this will be a great opportunity to participate in a highly visible event,” said Mary Hunter with ITD’s Office of Highway Safety.

The shoes will begin their journey in Coeur d’Alene on Jan. 22 and continue on to Lewiston for a media event on Jan. 23.

On Jan. 24, the shoes will be put on display on the Capitol steps in Boise as part of a morning news conference where representatives of the seat belt coalition will talk about the group’s mission and the impact seat belt fatalities have on Idahoans.

A media event also is planned around the exhibit in Twin Falls on Jan. 25. The tour wraps up in Idaho Falls and Pocatello on Jan. 26.
