DMV Modernization project to be explained
to sheriffs, assessors

Representatives from sheriff’s offices and county assessor offices throughout Idaho will receive brief introductions to the transportation department’s DMV Modernization project next week.

Shannon Barnes, manager of the modernization project, will speak to both groups when they meet in Boise Monday (Feb. 5). She will provide an overview of the modernization project, steps already under way in Phase I, and ITD’s vision for stabilizing and modernizing the DMV system and for using technology to improve future delivery.

The project initiated an Automated Drivers License Testing System on a limited basis in the fall of 2006 and will complete the installation of computer kiosks this spring. The kiosks give Idaho citizens the option of taking their driver’s license exams via computer.

Barnes will describe the Phase 1 goals, introduce about 10 projects planned over the next three years and will discuss impacts the new system will have on offices that process driver’s records, vehicle registration and titles.

“This is an ambitious project that will challenge us to learn new techniques and learn new processes,” Barnes explains. “But ultimately, it will become a more secure, user-focused system that meets the growing demands of a growing state.”

The Idaho Sheriff’s Association will meet at 11:15 a.m. and the mid-winter assessor’s conference will follow at 1:15 p.m. Both will draw between 50 and 60 people at the Double Tree-Riverside Inn.
