AASHTO sponsors annual photo contest

If your camera was a paintbrush and Idaho’s transportation system your subject, how would you paint it?

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) would like to know. Better yet, they’d like to see the portrait.

AASHTO offers a handsome reward for the photos that best illustrate transportation in America through its annual “Faces of Transportation” photo contest. “Transportation is about many facets of people’s lives – but always, it is about people,” according to the contest entry form.

“In this year’s AASHTO Faces of Transportation photo contest, we’d like to see a broad array of work in three general categories:"

  1. Roadways (new construction, reconstruction, work zones, safety enhancement, incident management, related structures such as sound walls or light and sign supports, interface with other modes)
  2. Bridge projects (various types of bridges, various users of bridges, bridge activities including not only construction or maintenance, but also inspection, shots that showcase special materials or construction techniques)
  3. Transit/air/water (photos of subways, light rail, buses, general and commercial aviation and ferries or port-related photography)

Top prize is $1,000 to be awarded for the best overall photo submitted. Prizes of $500 will be awarded for the best entry (other than the top overall photo) in each of the three categories.

Entries must be at least 8X10 prints of at least 300 dpi quality and be attached to a completed entry form or hand-drawn facsimile. A sticker must be affixed to the back of the print and must include the name of the photographer, name of the ITD section and information for a caption that identifies what the photo depicts and where it was taken.

Entrants are responsible for obtaining and forwarding a model release or any other permission or license necessary for sharing the photos. Entries lacking model releases when persons depicted are identifiable will be disqualified.

AASHTO reserves the right to exhibit, reproduce or distribute in any manner it chooses all of the contest entries.

ITD employees interested in more information about the contest or wanting to submit entries should contact the Public Affairs Office in Boise. The deadline for submitting entries to AASHTO is April 13. Please allow enough time to forward your entries through Public Affairs to meet the national deadline.
