Hike across Idaho as part of
2007 fitness challenge that begins April 15

ITD employees will have an opportunity to hike through Idaho during the next 10 weeks without wandering far from home – all in the name of improved fitness and better health.

This year’s fitness challenge “Centennial Trail: Hike thru Idaho” begins Sunday (April 15) and continues through June 23. Offered through ITD’s Wellness program, the challenge is to exercise at lease three hours per week for 10 weeks. Because it is based on the amount of time spent exercising rather than degree of difficulty, most employees should be able to participate and benefit from the activity.

“Whether you are already active or just getting started, this is an opportunity to motivate yourself to a new level of fitness,” organizers said.

As employees log their hours, they will “symbolically” follow along the Idaho State Centennial Trail that spans the state from the Nevada state line to Canada's border. Prizes are available to those who finish the challenge with at least 30 total hours of exertion. Participants can choose from a hooded pullover sweatshirt, a fleece vest, a backpack or baseball cap.

Everyone who reaches the midpoint (15 hours) also will receive a carabineer.
Prize drawings will be held throughout the challenge for employees who maintain and turn in their log sheets every two weeks.

For those who want companionship while they exercise, the fitness challenge has included a new “buddy” option this year. Exercise veterans are encouraged to sign up with an ITD “buddy” who has never participated in the spring exercise challenge before or one who has not finished the event the past two years. If both buddies reach the goal of 30 hours, they are eligible for a chance to receive a second incentive.

Employees also participate as part of a district or Headquarters team. Each year, one of the six district teams and one from Headquarters claim the traveling trophy, awarded for the best level of employee participation. In addition, the Federal Highway Administration has challenged the entire ITD team. In the ITD vs. FHWA competition, the team with the highest exercise average at the end of the challenge earns bragging rights.

Registration forms should be completed and sent to Pauline Davis by April 20. Employees can begin logging hours effective Sunday (April 15).
