District 4 employees contribute $6,468
to cancer battle through Relay for Life

District 4 employees are making a difference in lives off the highway as well as on it.
They recently participated in the American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" in the fight against cancer. The team gathered funds through solicitations, bake sales, cinnamon roll sales, soup sales, and other endeavors.

The Shoshone-based team contributed $6,468 to the Relay for Life effort and cancer research. ITD employees were awarded a plaque for making the highest donation from a new team. They were also in sixth place overall out of the 59 participating teams.

The Relay is a celebration of cancer survivors and the tangible results produced by cancer research. Participants join in memory of those loved ones who have fallen to cancer, but also gather in recognition that a positive attitude is a significant factor in battling the disease.
The opening ceremony for the annual fund-raising event drew 174 cancer survivors.

A member of each team committed to a shift in the relay that began at 6 p.m. and continued until noon the following day at Filer Elementary School. The walk is organized to recognize that cancer does not rest and neither do those dedicated to stopping it. Each team also set up a site that followed the event theme of "Color Me Cured."

Overall, the event raised $181,925, which will be used for local cancer patients and for national research.

The District 4 team was composed of: Bob Johnson, Walter Burnside, Betty Bradley, Rick Bradley, Allen King, Connie Jones, Amy Lierman, Bonita Koonce, James Bennett, Darrell McFarland, Mike Scott and Kathy Williams. Many of their family members also joined them on the weekend.

Road to Recovery is a program sponsored by the American Cancer Society to assist cancer patients by having volunteer drivers transport cancer patients to and from medical appointments.
