ITD's Division of Aeronautics is sponsoring three two-day Teacher Aviation Workshops this summer to demonstrate how aviation subjects can be incorporated into regular classroom lessons. "Although information covered in the workshops is primarily for grades 4-8, the lessons are appropriate for all grades through high school," explains Frank Lester, safety/education coordinator for the ITD Division of Aeronautics. The workshops are scheduled for June 18, 19 in Boise, June 21, 22 in Idaho Falls and July 12, 13 in Coeur d'Alene. "This is an exciting opportunity to learn unique ways of integrating aeronautics into mathematics and science while at the same time linking with reading, social studies and technology," Lester said. "These exciting, fun-filled, hands-on workshops will feature aviation activities that show how aviation can connect those subjects in the real world." Using official aeronautical charts, easy-to-make plotters and other low cost items, participants will generate a number of classroom-ready lessons and activities. All activities are aligned with the Idaho State Academic Standards. The workshops will explore:
College credit will be offered following completion of the two-day workshop. "Although time is short, all three workshops have openings for teachers interested in blending aviation with their lessons," Lester said.
