Summer brings mosquitoes and yet another season of West Nile Virus outbreaks for the state. The virus was recently discovered in mosquito pools in southwest Idaho. Last year, Idaho led the nation in WNV infections, with approximately 1,000 people suffering from the effects of the virus. The virus contributed to the deaths of 23 Idaho residents. Recently, representatives from Central District Health and the Ada County Mosquito Abatement District presented a program at Headquarters titled “Fight the Bite of the West Nile Virus.” Dave Fotsch and Jack Bennett talked about ways to protect against the dangers of the WNV. The HQ Safety Committee sponsored the program. The virus is transmitted to people, birds and other animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. This virus can cause serious illness in people of any age, but especially in people over the age of 50 or those with other underlying medical conditions. Foremost, protect yourself by avoiding mosquito bites. Taking the following precautions can help you "Fight the Bite." 1. Wear repellent containing DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (all EPA-approved repellents) according the label. 2. Remove standing water around your home, this is where mosquitoes like to breed, and 3. Cover up your skin with clothing between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
