GIS to return to centralized structure;
Liza Fox to serve as manager

The transportation department this week affirmed its commitment to improve and expand its Geographic Information System (GIS) and cartographic services by centralizing the program in the Division of Transportation Planning and Programming.

GIS and cartographic services were a fundamental part of the division’s service and support role to the department until about four years ago when some of the functions were dispersed into other sections and absorbed by other divisions.

“We tried that model on an experimental basis, and it didn’t meet all of our expectations so we’re returning to the model that served us well in the past,” said Matt Moore, Administrator of the Division of Planning and Programming.

Liza Fox will manage the reformulated GIS/cartographic services section, Moore announced.

“We’re excited to welcome her back to the division. Liza brings substantial talent and expertise and has a clear mission to improve and expand GIS/cartographic services for the department.”

“We recognize the value of GIS and cartographic services as a centralized program that serves all of our customers’ needs. We’re still defining the shape of the program, looking at other models in sister agencies and other state DOTs to see how to restructure it for maximum success.”

Moore expects the new GIS/cartographic services team to provide services such as digital mapping, support the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council’s on local road inventory program and develop more web-based applications for both our internal and external customers. ITD also will continue to contribute geographic data layers to a base information map maintained by the Department of Administration.

Dave Tolman will continue to oversee Corporate IT until a new Chief Technology Officer is named.
