Help desk offers advice on computer rotations

The IT Help Desk at Headquarters will help employees determine the best disposition of computers removed from service or designated as surplus.

“When sections get new computers and old ones are taken off the desk, it isn’t always easy to decide which ones should be considered for surplus.” according to a recent Help Desk memo. “Sometimes you may wonder if you are really selecting the worst computers to go out the door.”

Representatives from the Help Desk are available to help employees evaluate computers and advise about the best use of computers.

“At any time, send your request to the Help Desk and a technician will assist you… The technician will provide a summary, advising you of the best rotation schedule for your section’s computers, a priority list of computers that should be next in line for surplus, and a report that lists the following information:”

  • Computer name
  • Last known user
  • Operating system
  • Processor speed
  • RAM bytes
  • Hard drive size

The Help Desk at Headquarters can be reached at ext. 8175.
