Extremely dry and hot conditions throughout Idaho continue to worry firefighters who are battling 15 wildfires in central and south-central Idaho this week. As of this morning (Friday, Aug. 17), active fires are burning nearly 621,000 acres. Only two fires were contained in the past week. Motorists can expect reduced visibility because of smoke from wildfires burning primarily in the Payette and Boise national forests. Please check the Idaho Traveler Services Web site (511.idaho.gov) or call 511 if you expect to be driving in areas that may be affected by smoke. For the latest in fire conditions, visit the National Interagency Fire Center Web site. Also check with the appropriate jurisdiction before engaging in recreational activities outside of established campgrounds to determine if restrictions apply. Most of Idaho remains under a State II fire advisory that limits campfires, smoking and other activities. Under Stage II Restrictions, the following is prohibited:
These restrictions will remain in effect until rescinded by George Bacon, director of the Idaho Department of Lands. Contact the nearest Idaho Department of Lands Fire Warden for specific information about this Stage II Restriction Order.
