Research program seeks proposals for funding

ITD employees interested in learning about cost-effective techniques for improving bridge deck life through reduced cracking turned out for a morning presentation recently by researchers from the University of Kansas.

Professor David Darwin and student Will Lindquist discussed results of an initial research project on “Construction of Crack-Free Concrete Bridge Decks.” The study is part of a national “pooled-fund” project in which ITD is a participant.

The purpose of the research, Darwin explained, is to implement the most cost-effective techniques for improving bridge-deck life through the reduction of cracking on bridges in each participating state.

The study involved cooperation of cement companies, contractors and designers to develop materials, plans and specifications that ultimately could reduce bridge-deck cracking.
ITD already has incorporated some of the initial results of this research in its use of high-performance concrete.

The Kansas study is one of about 16 pool-funded projects, explains Ned Parrish, manager of ITD’s research office. In addition to cooperating with other transportation departments on research project, ITD also funds a number of its own research projects.

This week, Parrish’s office announced the solicitation of new research proposals from within the department. Each year, ITD conducts research and related activities, including development of new technologies or practices and training to encourage implementation of research findings.

Department staff, university researchers and others should use the form to submit project ideas. Proposals may address any aspect of the department’s responsibilities where research, development or technology transfer activities can be of benefit.

Projects are selected through an open, competitive process.
