District 4 opens new portable POE

ITD’s District 4 recently opened a new Port of Entry portable weigh station site on Idaho 46 between Wendell and Gooding.

The new site, located at milepost 3 just north of Wendell, was constructed because the section was seen as a gap in ITD's primary goal to monitor commercial vehicles for compliance with size and weight laws.

The new site joins two permanent Ports of Entry — on U.S. 93 near Hollister and Interstate 84 at Cotterell near Malta — as well as the 14 other portable sites on state highways in the area.

There also are several sites on local highways in which the state will work with law enforcement when requested by local highway districts, county and city officials or when officers observe flagrant violations in an area.

The roving Ports Of Entry help enforce federal and state safety and hazardous material regulations, registration, permit and driver qualification compliance. The operation of the portable site is necessary to ensure that heavy trucks do not damage roads.

This levels the playing field for honest carriers who operate legally. All code enforcement is targeted at making roadways safer for all who use them.

“We try and ensure compliance by all commercial and agriculture vehicles we have the authority to regulate. This is just one highway that is an obvious hole in our system,” ITD Port of Entry area supervisor Dennis Black said.
