Going Digital — What customers should know...

Idaho is changing the way license plates are produced by adopting the latest technology of digital “flat” plates, making the transition from traditional embossed plates. As a motorist, you will notice very little change in the way you apply for and renew your standard plates.

Standard plates still will be available at each county motor vehicle office. There will be no need to replace your current license plates until regular replacement is required, seven years from when the plate was issued.

For all specialty program plates, you can apply at your local county motor vehicle office and pay the appropriate specialty fees, you will be assigned the next available number, and will receive a temporary registration, valid for 45 days. Your new plates – produced digitally with more detailed and colorful designs – will be mailed directly to you.

The traditional embossed plates will be issued until the existing inventory is depleted.
For all personalized plate requests (standard and specialty), applications may be mailed or faxed to the Idaho Transportation Department, or you can utilize the online application form at itd.idaho.gov.
