Idaho schools list Walk to School activities

More than 30 Idaho schools have committed to participate in the Wednesday (Oct. 3) International Walk to School Day. Following is the latest information about their respective activities (some schools had not formalized their events in time for posting on the International Walk to School in the USA Web site: http://www.walktoschool-usa.org/ )

American Falls:

  • American Falls Intermediate School
    Bike Safety lessons and a biking rodeo involving all of our students.
Boise:
  • Pioneer Elementary School
    Boise State University Football players dress in jerseys help with the crossing guard and greet kids. We offer a healthy snacks and invite local dignitaries, i.e., the mayor, police chief and officers, fire department and Smoky Bear.
  • Whitney Elementary School
  • Liberty Elementary School
  • Maple Grove School
  • Koelsch Elementary School
    We are planning to have a professional bike rider come in and do a demonstration for the kids.
  • Shadow Hills Elementary School
  • Riverside Elementary School
    Walking and bicycle riding school buses from nearby park to allow students who live too far away to ride or walk from home to participate
  • Horizon Elementary School
    We are involving the parents, staff of our school, School SRO officer and local fitness people to participate and encourage children to walk to school.
  • Trail Wind Elementary School
    We will promote biking with the family - and participate in a chance to win money for the school for having the most biking kids on October 3rd. - this is Sponsored by George's Bike Shop in Boise.
  • Monroe Elementary School
  • Christy Richardson
  • Washington Elementary School
    We will be hosting a school assembly on Tuesday Oct. 2nd to promote to the kids the fun activities happening the following day but also to educate the kids about pedestrian safety.
  • Trail Wind Elementary School
    We are working with the Boise Family YMCA and other elementary schools in our district to help make this event a success for not only our school but for the whole district.

Bonners Ferry:

  • Valley View Elementary School
    Teachers, parents, and students participate in this event which consists of a 1.5 mile walk to our school. Our local police dept, our school food service dept, and our school dist. transportation dept. assist us in making this a great event for all.

Carey:

  • Carey School
    Carey Elementary and High School is the remote member of the Blaine County School District public school system. This is our first year of partnering with Wood River RideShare in developing a Safe Routes to School program. We hope to involve the entire Carey community in our effort to promote walking and biking to school and all related activities.

Coeur d'Alene:

  • Bryan Elementary School
    We will be promoting through our newsletter

Grace:

  • Grace School District
    Walk to school day to kick off new safety lights.

Hailey:

  • Wood River Middle School
    Our District has declared October as Walk and bike to school month. We plan to participate as part of the Kickoff Event on Oct. 3 with a variety of activities
  • Bcsd- Hailey Elementary School
    Hailey Elementary School has been a leader in the SRTS program for Idaho schools. Our SRTS program is in its fourth year as a partnership with Wood River RideShare. We have several strong and sustainable neighborhood groups walking and biking to the school. We have upgraded the street and sidewalk infrastructure at the school to create a safer school area. HES is committed to increasing the number of students who walk and bike to school. October 3 will be publicized in our School paper for walk/bike to school. Our volunteers and PTA will get the word out.
  • Woodside Elementary School
    This is our second year as a Safe Routes To School partner. In the last school year we added bike and pedestrian safety to our Physical Ed curriculum. Our programs resulted in 400 percent increase in the number of students biking/walking to school.
  • Wood River High School
    Our District has declared October as Walk and bike to school month. We plan to participate as part of the Kickoff Event on Oct. 3 with a variety of activities.

Idaho Falls:

  • Sunnyside Elementary School
    The children will wear their school spirit shirts and carry a balloon.

Ketchum:

  • Ernest Hemingway Elementary School
    Ernest Hemingway Elementary School is entering its second year of partnership with Wood River RideShare. the City of Ketchum has received an ITD-SRTS grant for infrastructure improvements to connect the school to the amazing bike path system that exists in Ketchum. Wood River RideShare has had limited success in the past- we hope to energize the parents and students into developing walking and biking groups. We hope October 3 is a successful indicator of the effort to walk and bike to Hemingway school.

Moscow:

Mountain Home:

  • Mountain Home Youth Center

New Plymouth:

  • New Plymouth
    This will be sort of a parade that the students walk through to get to school. Students that walk will receive a raffle ticket that enters them into a drawing for a bicycle & helmet.

Sandpoint:

  • Farmin Stidwell Elementary School
    The local Rotary Club helps with our Walk to School event, providing orange vests and refreshments for the walkers and bikers. We will be combining this year's event with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new sidewalk installed this summer.
