Money Honey:
BPA offers tips for couples struggling with finances

Business Psychology Associates, the state’s employee assistance program provider, offers the following suggestions to couples that are struggling with finances.

  • Schedule a weekly or monthly meeting with your spouse to discuss money matters. Try not to discuss money matters during any other time - especially not during the heat of an argument, or after a stressful day at work.
  • Divide responsibilities for regular financial chores as evenly as possible. This way, neither partner is shouldering the burden of the work, and neither feels they have more say in financial matters.
  • Each person should have an "allowance" - money they can spend without consulting their partner.
  • Keep each other informed of all individual assets and debts.
  • Take advantage of fringe benefits provided by your respective employers.
  • Establish or maintain individual credit histories.
  • If your financial status improves due to a job change or promotion, reassess your money management system and/or budget. Now may be the time to save a little more, use the extra money to pay off debt, or apply it to the principal on your house.
