Research council looks for projects that benefit
transportation, efficiency

Members of the ITD Research Advisory Council met Sept. 26 to discuss research proposals and priorities, narrowing an initial list of 29 projects to 11 for funding and committing to find alternative resources to conduct four other projects:

1. Turbo Relocation: Electronic Relocation System for Right-of-Way (Jesse W. Smith)
2. Life Cycle Cost Comparison Between Low Intensity, Medium Intensity and Solar-Powered Runway Lighting Systems (Mark Lessor)
3. Real Time Bridge Monitoring Program Using Web-based ScourWatch Application (Matt Farrar)
4. Native Plants for Roadside Revegetation: Influence on Slope Stabilization, Erosion and Sediment Control and Prevention of Weed Encroachment (Brent Jennings)

In reviewing the 29 proposals, advisory committee members applied the following criteria for allocating funds:

  • Is the proposal understandable and complete?
  • Does the project support a department priority of key strategic initiative?
  • Does the proposal address practical problems?
  • Does the project meet a clearly identified need for ITD and/or its partners?
  • Does the proposal involve/benefit both Headquarters and district staff or does it benefit more than one division?
  • Does the proposal provide a new way of looking at a problem?
  • Will the project provide a usable end product?
  • Are the desired outcomes clearly identified?
