COMPASS wins international award

An international organization named the Communities in Motion: Regional Long-Range Transportation Plan 2030 its project of the year merit award winner. The announcement came in mid-November at the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) annual meeting.

The Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) created the Communities in Motion public involvement project to guide transportation planning efforts for Idaho’s largest and fastest growing metropolitan area.

The COMPASS project was one of five awarded from 22 projects worldwide. COMPASS was recognized for its use of innovative public participation techniques and for successfully involving the public in the process.

Earlier this fall, the long-range plan received a national award for Outstanding Achievement in Metropolitan Transportation Planning from the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations. That honor was given for planning efforts that tie quantitative and qualitative evaluations of land use patterns to transportation needs, for involving the public in significant ways and for bringing community attention to the need for transportation and land-use integration.

IAP2 is the only professional association dedicated to improving public participation and has more than 1,000 members from 26 nations, and a 15-member board of directors from Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and the U.S.
