– Our Mission: Your Mobility –
New mission statement becomes guiding ITD principle

“Our Mission. Your Mobility.”

Clear, concise and direct, the four words were chosen recently to serve as ITD’s mission statement. They remind employees and the public that our fundamental principle as a state department is to ensure mobility options.

“Our mission statement builds on concepts first identified by our comprehensive visioning process, “ Idaho’s Transportation Vision: Getting There Together,” explains ITD Director Pam Lowe. “The mission clearly reflects the priorities that emerged from the visioning process and will serve as a foundation for everything we do – ensuring the mobility of Idahoans.”

ITD’s Strategic Planning Team met regularly between June and November to complete a department mission, vision and strategic plan. The team included Lowe, Scott Stokes, Steve Hutchinson, Sue Higgins, Julie Pipal, Dave Tolman, Marty Montgomery (succeeded by Randy Kyrias), JV DeThomas, Alan Frew, Matt Moore, Devin Rigby, Jeff Stratten, Mary Harker and Carri Rosti.

The vision statement describes what ITD will do and explain where the department will focus its efforts. That vision is for ITD to:

“…be an industry leader in providing transportation systems and services that are safe, efficient, promote economic vitality, and use innovative technology. ITD will achieve quality through:

  • Investing in Our People
  • Expanding and Enhancing Partnerships
  • Leading through Agency Performance
  • Improving Our Customer Service Culture

To effectively address those four focus areas, quality management teams were charted to establish recommendations that fully realize the potential for the Idaho Transportation Department and our partners in the four areas.

The quality management teams will be asked to present bold recommendations within their action plans that address their focus areas and themes. Those forward-thinking recommendations will address both short-term issues (within the next three years) and those that will take between three and five years to achieve.

Members of the four quality management teams are:

  • Investing in Our People: Mary Harker (sponsor), Marcia Aitken, Allen King, Monica Crider, Pat Carr, Connie Lane-Porter, Steve Martin and Greg Laragan.
  • Expanding and Enhancing Partnerships: Steve Hutchinson (sponsor), Ned Parrish, Tina Klamt, Tom Cole, Sherie Sweaney, Steve O’Neal, Pete Hartman (Federal Highway Administration) and Ed Pemble
  • Leading through Agency Performance: Julie Pipal (sponsor), Joel Drake, Dave Amick, Diego Curt, Bob Schumacher, Bonnie Fogdall, Renee Sigel (Federal Highway Administration) and Randy Gill
  • Improving Our Customer Service Culture: Alan Frew (sponsor), Amy Smith, Mike Pape, Barry Takeuchi, Sonna Lynn Fernandez, Alison Lantz, Barbara Babic and Ken Angell

Draft outlines for focus areas of each quality management team are due to the director on Jan. 22, 2008. Drafts will be presented to the Idaho Transportation Board in April and refined and delivered in final form to the board next June. They will be incorporated in ITD’s 2009 Strategic Plan and reported to the Division of Financial Management.
