Amber Hagerman's legacy lives on,
saving lives recovering abducted children

On Jan.13, 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was abducted and later, murdered. Twelve years later her death remains unsolved. Yet the tragedy of Amber Hagerman's abduction and death manifested into a wonderful legacy - the AMBER Alert.

AMBER Alerts are an early notification system that includes law enforcement, the broadcast community, various state and public agencies as well as the public. When seconds count, America's children can rely on the AMBER Alert and individuals. Nationally, 370 children have been reunited with their families through AMBER Alerts.

AMBER Alerts are displayed on ITD'S 511 Traveler Services Web site on a crawling banner at the top of the page and are announced on the 511 telephone system.

Idaho's AMBER plan became effective with the signature of Gov. Dirk Kempthorne in December 2005. The Idaho plan is a collaborative effort that includes Idaho State Police, city & county law enforcement, various state agencies including the Idaho Transportation Department, State Communications Center, the Idaho Lottery, Idaho broadcasters, the National Weather Service, private business partnerships and the public.
