Safety mobilizations planned statewide;
holiday campaign nets 411 DUI arrests

Drivers, be forewarned: more highway safety mobilizations targeting impaired drivers are planned this year.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Idaho will participate in impaired driving mobilizations March 12-19 (St. Patrick’s Day), July 2-7 (Independence Day), Aug. 20 – Sept. 3 (Labor Day) and Dec. 19 – Jan. 2, 2009 (Christmas and New Year’s Day).

Increased efforts to catch drunk drivers on Idaho highways last Christmas/New Year holiday season led to 411 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, according to Kevin Bechen with ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety.

Statewide, 36 law enforcement agencies participated in the overtime mobilization which ran from Dec. 17, 2007, through Jan. 2, 2008. The overtime patrols were funded through a federal grant administered by ITD.

In addition to the DWI arrests, law enforcement officers apprehended 175 fugitives, made 225 felony arrests, recorded 331 drug arrests and recovered nine stolen vehicles. A number of additional citations also were issued during the 17-day period:

  • 332 seat belt citations
  • 35 child safety citations
  • 435 suspended license citations
  • 1,230 uninsured motorist citations
  • 1,815 speeding citations
  • 67 reckless driving citations
