'Road closed' signs get a workout this month

If you think it’s been difficult to travel from point A to point B during the relentless waves of winter early this month, there’s good reason. All six of ITD’s districts reported at least one closure and one highway in District 6 was closed nine times, according to a report compiled last week by Greg Laragan, assistant chief engineer – operations.

A 20-mile segment of U.S. 26 between Idaho Falls and Swan Valley (mileposts 250-370) was closed most often, sometimes closing and reopening more than once on the same day.

Three other highways were closed seven times during the week of Feb. 11, Laragan reports.

Idaho 32, 28 miles between Ashton and Tetonia; Idaho 38, 20 miles between Malad City and Holbrook; and 48 miles of Interstate 84 from the I-86 junction to the Idaho/Utah state line. Three highways were closed five times during the week, and three others were closed four times.

Snowfall, high winds and blowing and drifting snow hit District 6 hardest. Of the 28 highway segments closed statewide, nine were in District 6 (including U.S. 93/20/26 which it shares with District 4).

Eight closures were reported in District 4 (including the shared highway) and six closures occurred in District 5. Two segments of U.S. 95 in District 2 were closed twice and two segments were closed in District 3. District 1 recorded one closed segment.

Counting the multiple closures, highways closed 96 times during the period.
