DMV introduces new online system for drivers
who want to pay reinstatement fees or check their status

A new online service introduced by the Idaho Transportation Department allows motorists to check their driving status at no charge and allows payment of reinstatement fees for drivers with suspended or revoked licenses.

Idaho is one of the first states in the nation to offer this combination of online services.

Previously, drivers could check their driving status only by calling or visiting ITD’s Headquarters in Boise, or by purchasing a driving record. Reinstatement fee payments could be made only by phone, mail or in person.

ITD hopes the service, accessible from Idaho’s official Web site, http://www.idaho.gov, will reduce the number of telephone calls it receives daily from drivers who simply want to check their license status after they have completed reinstatement requirements. Officials estimate that 70 callers a day are requesting only a status check.

Between 70,000 and 85,000 driver’s licenses are suspended and/or revoked each year in Idaho. Of those, about 45,000 drivers pay reinstatement fees and reinstate their driving privileges.  Once the required suspension period has passed and reinstatement fees have been paid, additional actions may need to be taken to reinstate privileges.

To use the online system, users must enter their name, birth date and Idaho driver’s license number or Social Security number to view license status. If applicable, instructions for reinstating driving privileges also will be displayed.

Insurance companies, motor carriers and similar businesses can set up a user name and password to pay reinstatement fees on behalf of multiple drivers.

Online payments can be made through the state’s secure payment portal using a credit or debit card that displays a Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover logo. As a result of a new Idaho Transportation Board policy, all DMV online vendor-processing fees will be passed on to customers who use the online driver’s license reinstatement fee payment service or other DMV online payment services.

NIC subsidiary, Access Idaho, developed and maintains the Internet software at no cost to taxpayers. Since no taxpayer dollars were used to develop and maintain the programs, vendor-processing fees cover those costs.
