In busy work day, good diet often goes out window

In the daily rush and pressure of our working days harried workers tend to forgo a well balanced diet. Many workers eat at their desk usually grabbing whatever is available in the company vending machine. Filling up on sweets or high-fat foods throughout the day causes individuals to eat less at regular meals.

Working long hours under stressful conditions can make matters worse, research shows. Mental stress – such as worry resulting from a feud with a coworker or fear of giving a presentation—tends to drive people to sugary, fatty foods. Experts sometimes refer to these folks as “emotional eaters.” Combat this problem by choosing a healthier outlet for your anxiety.

Try deep-breathing exercises or try waiting 15 minutes or more to eat allowing the craving to pass. Go out to eat rather than eating at your desk everyday. Bring healthy food choices from home for snacks and lunch. Form a walking group with co-workers and take brisk walks around the block.

Almost half of all cancer deaths are preventable, aside from one obvious culprit –  smoking – your nutrition and exercise habits also play a key role in promoting good
health.

Choosing low-risk behaviors and maintaining a proper weight, which means staying within your recommended body mass index (BMI), can help you guard against colon, breast and prostate cancer. If you would like to compute your BMI visit www.  nhlbisupport.com/bmi.

As the cold winter passes us by and warmer weather with sunny days invites us to spend more time in the sun, you should remember to use sun block, even on overcast days. Inspect your own skin monthly for new moles, freckles or blemishes that change in size, shape or color. Ask your doctor to set a timetable for scheduling cancer-related screening tests. For example a colonoscopy can catch colorectal cancer in its early stages, and a qualified doctor can conduct a skin exam and remove potentially cancerous moles—to protect against possible melanoma.

Maintaining wellness can be accomplished by doing little things for ourselves throughout the day. Start small and work up to bigger goals like starting an exercise program or changing your dietary habits to allow for a healthier lifestyle. Be good to yourself and take care of the one body you have in order to live a healthy and happy life.
