Three-day conference to consider options for
developing integrated public transportation

Idaho is somewhat an anomaly – many of its citizens remain geographically separated, yet at the same time they are highly mobile and depend on that mobility to remain connected.

A three-day mobility summit planned this week in Boise will explore the future of public transportation and how it will meet the demands of Idaho citizens. “Mobility Idaho 2008,” will begin Tuesday at the Doubletree Riverside Inn, 2900 Chinden Blvd. Randy Kyrias, administrator of ITD’s Division of Public Transportation, will serve as moderator. He will deliver a welcoming message and introduce guests beginning at 1 p.m.

The mobility summit will conclude after a morning session on Thursday.

Those who attend will have an opportunity to learn about and help develop the future vision for public transportation in Idaho. They also will learn about:

  • How a Medicaid brokerage system in Idaho will impact transportation services
  • Technology improvements on the horizon for Idaho
  • The people who are involved in public transportation statewide and how Idahoans are all connected
  • The fear of change and coordination
  • Opportunities to take a leadership role in building a sustainable public transportation network, beginning in their own communities

The summit will begin Tuesday (April 29) with an overview on “Trends in Public Transportation Coordination: What They are and Why They Work,” by Rick Krochalis, and is Region 10 administrator for the Federal Transit Administration.

Barb Singleton, will follow with a presentation on “Coordination at Work in Region 10 and Idaho’s Leadership Role." She represents United We Ride, Region 10 administrator of the Community Transportation Association of America.

The opening morning also includes  a presentation on Human Services and the Role of Coordination by Richard Armstrong, director of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Tuesday’s agenda will conclude with an two-hour afternoon panel discussion: “Players in Public Transportation,” with ITD’s John Krause serving as moderator. Panelists include:

  • Kelly Buckland, executive director, State Independent Living Council
  • Randy Kyrias, administrator, Idaho Transportation Department, Division of Public Transportation
  • Glenn Miles, transportation manager, Kootenai County Metropolitan Planning Organization and Spokane Regional Transportation Council
  • Tammy Eaton, city of Bellevue, Rural/local Government
  • Robert Spaulding, grants management officer, the Coeur d'Alene Tribe
  • Joe Herring, executive director Region 4 Development Association and chair, Public Transportation Advisory Council
  • Russ Barron, division administrator, Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Division of Welfare, and chair, Interagency Working Group for Public Transportation
  • Cecelia Hockett, vanpool operations coordinator, ACHD, Commuteride and chair, Community Transportation Association of Idaho, Board of Directors

The event also will include an introduction of and discussion on Idaho’s Mobility and Access Pathway (IMAP), produced by the Idaho Transportation Department. Based on extensive stakeholder input, IMAP outlines the vision and scope within a new paradigm for working and furthering public transportation in Idaho.

The vision is “coordinated and contemporary mobility management networks [that] provide accessible and seamless services in an efficient, effective, and intelligent manner.”
