Law Enforcement Liaisons meet in Boise

Law enforcement officers designated as Law Enforcement Liaisons (LEL) to ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety (OHOS) assembled May 12 in Boise. The meeting preceded the annual Highway Safety Summit that drew an estimated 185 individuals interested in promoting safety on Idaho’s Highways (see related story).

The purpose of the meeting was to provide information to the LEL’s and assist the LEL’s in their efforts to increase participation in traffic law enforcement and our statewide mobilizations.

A number of OHOS representatives updated the Law Enforcement Liaisons about the status of their specific programs and anticipated enforcement mobilizations. Among them were:

  • Mary Hunter, Highway Safety overview
  • Carroll Dodd - impact training
  • Kevin Bittner - seat belts, child passenger safety and unbiased policing
  • Pat Beale - aggressive driving and motorcycles
  • Kevin Bechen - impaired driving and interlock systems
  • Margaret Goertz - traffic records and youth programs
  • Lisa Losness - bicycle and pedestrian safety, emergency medical services and LEL coordination
  • Joan Benzon - fatality reporting
  • Kelly Campbell – principal analyst

The afternoon session included a review of recent conferences attended by the LEL’s and a discussion on strategies to increase agency participation in enforcement mobilization efforts.

These meetings are held twice a year.
