Highway safety mobilization effort Highway safety law enforcement mobilizations save lives, and also catch criminals and help reduce overall crime, according to ITD statistics. Numbers compiled by the Office of Highway Operations and Safety show that a statewide St. Patrick’s Day campaign targeting impaired drivers achieved 265 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and 43 underage alcohol arrests. The campaign also led to 93 felony arrests, 172 drug arrests, the capture of 122 fugitives and recovery of two stolen vehicles. The effort produced a number of additional citations during the seven-day period, March 12 – 19.
Officers cited 520 uninsured drivers and another 266 motorists for driving with suspended licenses. Statewide, 31 law enforcement agencies and 416 officers participated in the overtime patrols funded through ITD. A seat belt enforcement mobilization continues through June 2. More mobilizations are planned for the coming months targeting impaired driving, July 2-7 and Aug. 20-Sept. 3, and aggressive driving, July 18-27. Published 5-23-8 |
