Tournaments considered for state's heavy hitters

Whether you’re more adept at swinging a golf club or a softball bat, the state of Idaho is considering opportunities to bring employees together in lively team competition.

Tony Pirc of the Division of Building Safety wants to build on the interest and success of the first-ever co-ed state employee softball tournament by organizing a sequel this fall. Sixteen teams from Idaho departments and agencies formed teams and competed early this month in a tournament built around Public Employee Appreciation Week.

ITD’s Road Warriors placed second in the 16-team double-elimination tournament, losing to the Department of Correction in the championship game.

“We are trying to see if there is enough interest from the various state agencies to put together an agency co-ed team to compete against other state agencies for either a one-day tournament or multiple-day schedules, depending on response,” Pirc explained in an e-mail message this week.

Like its spring predecessor, the fall event would be staged at Willow Lane Athletic Complex in Boise and feature mixed, 12-member teams (six females and six males) of state employees. The tournament could involve 16 or 32 teams, played either on a single weekend or continued to a second weekend if response is sufficient.

The cost would be $165 per team. Players would need to wear uniforms or shirts with numbers. Team photos and a 5-by-7 photograph would be provided for each player. Concessions would be available and a post-tournament barbecue would be possible.

Employees interested in participating should contact Pric by May 30 at 332-8995 or by e-mail at tpirc@dbs.idaho.gov .

Best-ball scramble golf
For employees more comfortable on the fairways, greens and sand traps there may be an option of a State Employee Golf Tournament this summer. Chris Minter of the State Controller's Office is testing the interest level of employees and would like responses by May 30. He is available at 332-8740 or by e-mail at cminter@sco.idaho.gov .

“At the current time, my plan is rather premature. However, I’ve collected various cost models from golf courses that would host such a tournament…” Minter said.

Individual cost is estimated to be between $75 and $8,5 based on cart rental, greens fees, a post-tournament barbecue, awards and gratuities.

The tournament could include a shotgun start on a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning in July or September. Courses that may be considered are Shadow Valley, Lake View, Eagle Hills, Centennial or Ridge Crest.

“If a four-player group from your agency would like to participate, please e-mail me or call me as soon as possible,” Minter said. He also is looking for help in organizing the tournament and in securing donations for player prizes.

Both tournaments – softball and golf – would be limited to state employees only.
