Independent living organization works with
AmeriCorps to form new accessibility network

A statewide organization that supports independent living for Idaho’s special-needs population has joined with AmeriCorps to create an accessible transportation network.

The Idaho State Independent Living Council this week announced creation of the new program through an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and Serve Idaho.

It will be the first AmeriCorps program designed and operated by individuals with disabilities and will focus on increasing accessible and affordable transportation options throughout the state, according to Randy Kyrias, administrator of the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Public Transportation.

The lack of accessible and affordable transportation has been identified as the most significant barrier to independent living for Idahoans with disabilities, Kyrias explains. Through grant funding, 22 transportation options will be initiated throughout the state within three years.

“This is the only AmeriCorps program where Idahoans with disabilities are being involved at every level, from the ground up,” said Kelly Buckland, executive director of the independent living council.

The Idaho Centers for Independent Living and the Boise office of the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired serve as host sites for the AmeriCorps members. They are recruiting members who will receive an annual living stipend of $11,400 and an educational award of $4,725 for their service.
