Wind turbine base crashed into overpass

Components of a wind turbine tower being transported on Interstate 86 recently failed to clear an overpass near Pocatello, resulting in significant damage to one of the structure’s stringers.
 
The crash occurred at about 4:50 p.m. on Sept. 25, about 40 miles east of the junction with I-84. The commercial hauler reportedly obtained an over-height permit, but the permit required exiting the interstate at an interchange near milepost 40.
 
For unknown reasons, the driver failed to comply with conditions of the permit and did not heed warnings from the pilot car.
 
ITD is assessing damage to the structure and repair costs. An estimate will be forwarded to the hauler’s insurance company.
