511 Traveler Services expands cameras/images

The increasing popularity of Web cameras as a source for winter driving conditions led to major improvements of the Idaho Transportation Department’s Idaho Traveler Services system the past year.

Web images use a combination of the transportation department’s 511 resources, cameras from remote stations (Remote Weather Information System), and from private partners. All of the images are still snapshots in time, rather than video, but they offer motorists a firsthand view of the selected highway.

Some images are updated more often than others, and Web users are asked to be patient when accessing information. Because of their remote locations, the cameras are vulnerable to the effects of weather, such as fog, rain or condensation. ITD makes every attempt to keep the cameras operating at optimal performance.

Camera images are best viewed from the high bandwidth Web option or on Mobile Web devices because of download time requirements.

The transportation department provides images from about 100 cameras located at 75 sites statewide. Additional camera images are accessible from ITD partners through the 511 Traveler Services system. For camera images go to: 511.idaho.gov
