Winter delivers cold welcome to District 1

Winter maintenance operations in northern Idaho are facing some unique challenges as temperatures drop to near record lows, ITD announces. Crews are switching to sanding material as salt becomes less effective in extremely cold temperatures.

Sanding material without any additional salt is being used on state highways at strategic locations, but is easily blown off the roadway by passing traffic. State crews are working around the clock, seven days a week, and cover a road section at least four times per day, more often during storms.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution at all times, especially during severe weather conditions. Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.

Drivers can be cited for not following the Basic Rule, driving reasonably and prudently for conditions.

The first winter storms of the season can catch many drivers off-guard. With a little planning, winter travel can be safe. Here are a few tips:

Slow down, leave a few minutes early and allow extra time to get to a destination.
Wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest safety precautions one can take. Also, children must be properly secured in a safety seat that is designed for their age and weight.
Before leaving home, check the 511 Traveler Services Web site at 511.idaho.gov or dial 511. Reports are available on highway conditions, mountain passes and the weather.
