Uber's story: District 5 introduces new
four-legged maintenance worker

From Amy Day
District 5 Maintenance

The week of Nov. 3, the Downey/McCammon crew in District Five noticed a yelping sound coming from the south side of the maintenance yard.  They commented to each other that it must be a pack of coyote pups looking for their mom.

The weather was cold and wet, with snow, wind, rain and 30-degree nights.  After two days, the pup was still yelping. Curiously, Jeremy Wood, Amy Day, Dale Wheeler and Gene Crockett went looking to see where the sound was coming from. They were stunned to find a tiny puppy, just seven or eight weeks old, with his paw pinned underneath a section of guardrail.

The guys freed the puppy’s paw. He was shivering and in shock. Amy scooped him up and tucked him inside her coat, saying, “EWW!  BURRRR!  Are you freezing little guy?” They took him inside the shed to get a better look at his foot, and get him warm.

His paw was squished flat and bleeding.

Dale and Amy wrapped his foot. He whimpered, but it was obvious he was glad to be alive. The crew had work to do, so they bundled the wounded pup up in a coat and placed him in a box. He slept on the floorboard of a Freightliner to Pocatello.

While waiting for the salt brine truck to fill up, the guys from Bridge and Building shared their lunches with the pup. It was evident at that time that the pup was going to live. He stole the hearts of the people in the office and had many offers of a good home.

However, Amy had already decided to keep him.  The next day, the word had spread around the district about the ordeal, and the pup was promptly suited with a state picture badge of his own.  When Mathew Bezayiff, D-5 Information Technician, asked what name was to be printed on the badge, Amy said, “His name is Eww! Burrrr!”  Mathew asked, “How do you spell that? “U. B. U. R. ,”  Amy replied.

Amy says Ubur is doing well, and has been checked out by the vet.  He is on antibiotics, baby aspirin and has lost one toe. When he sleeps, it seems that he has nightmares of being stuck again. He’ll whimper and lick at his bandage while trying to back up.  He limps a bit, but his spirit is unmatched and he seems very appreciative.

Ubur is loved and admired by those who meet him.
