Cole, Cantwell receive Idaho Highway Users awards

ITD employees Steve Cole and Lennett Cantwell were honored with Motorvator Awards by the Idaho Highway Users Inc. for outstanding contributions to Idaho’s transportation system.

The awards were presented during the organization’s annual luncheon for state legislators Tuesday in Boise.

Cole, District 4 Hailey-area maintenance foreman, was named Maintenance Person of the Year and Cantwell, District 2 transportation technician, was awarded Safety Person of the Year honors.

Joining ITD in the late 1970s as an hourly employee in Stanley, Cole became a full-time employee in 1991 but left the department to work as the maintenance coordinator for the city of Sun Valley.

Cole rejoined ITD in 2004 as a transportation technician and was promoted to Hailey maintenance foreman in 2007.

“Steve has been a model in the district for maintaining, establishing and growing relationships with local government agencies and officials,” said Ron Robinson in nominating Cole for the award. Robinson is the District 4 maintenance coordinator.

“In the last year, Steve has been recognized by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for assistance with angler parking and information, and by the Blaine County Sheriff’s Department for assistance in wintertime emergency situations – most recently for helping find two children lost in a Christmas Day snowstorm,” Robinson explained.

Cantwell has worked at ITD since 1992. In addition to her normal duties, she also served as a member of the district’s “Special Crew” where she and others promote winter driving, highway and work zone safety to children in the local school district.

“Lennett is a driving force behind these presentations,” said Rod Parsells, Cantwell’s supervisor. “She does these presentations not only because she enjoys doing them, but because she believes teaching kids early to think and act safely on and near the highway will and has produced positive results.”

The schools have sent many pictures and thank-you notes to Cantwell and the other Special Crew members for their outreach efforts.

ITD Director Pamela Lowe presented the Motorvator Awards.

The Idaho Highway Users Inc. is an organization created nearly 60 years ago to “proactively advocate for the continuous improvement and safety of the Idaho highway system,” said Scott Ellsworth, the group’s chairman.
