District 3 names Moles new maintenance engineer

Gary Moles was named District 3’s Maintenance Engineer on Feb. 6.

Moles has served in several capacities in his tenure with ITD, including District 3 Materials Engineer, Roadway Design Area Engineer, and District 3 Region 4 Engineer.

He has been with ITD since being hired as an EIT in Nov. 1979.

The district now returns to the traditional ITD organization structure. This is in response to a continually increasing construction workload and its impact on the ability of the four Regional Engineers in charge of both construction and maintenance to devote adequate attention to both.

With Moles being named to his new position, the four District 3 Resident Engineers will focus solely on construction administration of the sizable STIP, GARVEE and off-system programs.

The new position also will enhance planning and coordination of the maintenance and highway operations, according to District 3 Engineer Dave Jones.

The district has some unique challenges with the Incident Response crews and the statewide avalanche crews, as well as the largest inventory of road mileage in the department.  District 3 has the most lane and centerline miles and is home to the largest population and most vehicles.

The return to the traditional Maintenance Engineer organizational model also will enable District 3 to coordinate more effectively with other districts, since ITD continues to de-emphasize the district boundaries and collaborate on maximizing the utilization of limited resources.
