ITD employees volunteer language proficiencies
to ensure non-English speaking customers have voice

ITD employees often come in contact with citizens whose primary language is not English.

Recognizing the need to communicate with them effectively, Headquarters has identified and secured the services of employees who are proficient in non-English languages to serve as interpreters.

Twelve ITD employees have agreed to share their expertise in Spanish as occasional needs arise. Spanish, by far, is the most frequently needed foreign language requested. ITD employees also volunteer their services for a number of other languages, including:

  • Bengali
  • Chinese
  • German
  • French
  • Swahili
  • Russian (to a limited extent), and
  • Vietnamese

In addition, Vicki Johnson of the Drivers Services section of Division of Motor Vehicles also can assist with sign language for the hearing impaired. A TDD telephone also is located in the Special Plates section at DMV for the hearing impaired.

See the attached list of employees willing to assist with language interpretation. The list also is available on the Intranet by selecting “resources” from the menu on the left side of the main page and going to ITD Translators Directory.
