Reflective clothes should be worn correctly to be effective

The intent of wearing high-visibility reflective clothing while working on highways is to be seen at night. A photograph provided by District 5 demonstrates the importance, not only of wearing the specialized clothing, but wearing it correctly, said District 3 Engineer Dave Jones.

He used the photograph to remind maintenance workers how to dress for safety while working on Idaho’s highways at night:

The soft hats we supply are pretty effective but tip them back too far and you lose some of that benefit (third employee from the right). This should also serve as a good example of why employees need to wear the ITD issued soft hats instead of non-issue hats.
Not all reflective jackets are equal. The guy on the far left should be wearing a vest over a jacket like that. The guys with their jackets wide open don’t reflect as well as the jackets that are zipped shut. Reflective vests work the same way (note the employee third from the right has his vest unsnapped).
Orange shirts (2nd from the right) offer no protection at all.
Other than the reflective logo on the loader (above the head of the employee third from the left) the equipment offers little reflective display for motorists.
