ITD law enforcement mobilization
catches more than impaired drivers

ITD's Christmas/New Year's impaired driving law enforcement mobilization shows that more people than just impaired drivers were arrested.

According to statistics gathered by ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety, 41 agencies statewide participated in the holiday patrols that were funded through a federal grant administered by ITD.

Law enforcement officers made 390 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests across the state during the 13-day period (Dec. 22, 2008, to Jan. 3, 2009).

In addition to the DUI arrests, law enforcement officers also apprehended 113 fugitives, made 152 felony arrests, recorded 172 drug arrests and recovered four stolen vehicles. More than 2,900 other citations were issued during the mobilization, including:

  • 281 seat belt citations
  • 21 child safety seat citations
  • 293 suspended license citations
  • 995 uninsured motorist citations
  • 1,226 speeding citations
  • 42 reckless driving citations
  • 73 underage alcohol possession citations

ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety works to reduce deaths and injuries from traffic crashes by using federal funds to address dangerous driving behaviors. The department's next statewide impaired driving law enforcement mobilization is planned to begin Sunday (March 8) and continue through March 22.
