National authority to give presentation
on context sensitive design April 8

Anne Canby, a national authority on the use of context sensitive design will be among the speakers featured at ITD’s bi-annual Project Development Conference April 7, 8 in Boise.

She also will give a presentation as part of an education series sponsored by the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) Wednesday, April 8, at the ITD Headquarters auditorium. The ITD presentation will be from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. A public reception is planned from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This presentation is especially appropriate for planning staff, developers, real estate professionals, and elected officials, as well as anyone else interested in transportation and public transit issues.

Canby is a nationally recognized progressive leader in the transportation field and is a staunch advocate for integrating land-use and transportation planning. She is president of the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership, a national advocacy coalition for transportation reform.

She is a transportation leader noted for transforming a traditional highway agency (Delaware Department of Transportation) into a multimodal mobility provider. Canby is President of the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership (STPP), a national advocacy coalition for transportation reform. She also is a member of the executive committee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and received the 2006 Carey Distinguished Service Award for outstanding leadership and service to transportation research and the TRB.

Canby will speak about Context Sensitive Design, an approach to transportation decision-making that is based on the premise that roadway standards and development practices should be flexible and sensitive to community values. It encourages roadway design decisions that balance economic, social and environmental objectives.

The COMPASS education series brings nationally and regionally prominent speakers to the Treasure Valley to discuss transportation, growth and related issues.
