D-5 volunteers help lay out 'Field of Heroes'

ITD employees from District 5 volunteered to spend the morning of May 18 supporting the 9th annual “Field of Heroes” at Century High School in Pocatello.

Roger Ellis, Jeremy Gough, Kathy Buffat and Ryen Johnson assisted organizers from the Yellow Ribbon Campaign in installing a small white cross representing every U.S. military fatality in the Afghanistan and Iraq War on Terrorism.  The columns containing 120 crosses each were placed using survey methods and equipment to keep the lines straight and the spaces even.

As shown in the photo, the effect provides the straight lines emanating from the viewer, when looking out in nearly any direction.  Additional assistance was provided by a diverse group of people, including Bannock County, Pocatello School District, the 1016 Army Reserve, A&E Engineering, Idaho State University, private surveyors and many others.

Note: Last weekend, my son (Shay Johnson) and I went to the Field of Heroes, and I took some photos for a friend.  I stitched these photos into roughly a 170-degree panorama.  The cross that Shay is kneeling by is for Curtis R. Hall, Petty Office 2nd Class, U.S. Navy, who lived in Burley, and was killed by hostile fire on April 6, 2007.  Curtis was a friend of a friend.
